Nothing much

Hey guys!

So yea... Nothing much, today work basically didn't do much backing up, came up with storyboard and idea for showreel though. Went out to Jurong Regional Library to move the Rihlah exhibition to Woodlands Regional Library before rushing off to meet my dear sis.

Basically let both Hong Yong and Jia Zhen play with the E-PL2 and the XZ-1, so embarrassing that I was late :S

Treated my dear sis to dinner and went back with her mum hahahah.

Some hot sauce apparently

Hong Yong

Jia Zhen

I'm quite liking the XZ-1, when one works with the limits of a compact camera of course! That's pretty much all for today. Good night world!

Woah! Almost a week has passed

Hey guys!!!

So yea... Attachment is ending soon. Meaning NS is coming close as well. Nothing much other than work. I don't remember much either hahaha.

Had kopi sesion on Wednesday and well... It was probably the smallest one ever. My mentor Clifford couldn't make it, he's back in Hong Kong now if I'm not wrong, he should be going back to China soon. God bless him. Great man, I seriously can't stop saying how great a man he is XD. But he's not the greatest of course, but he certainly is great XD

I collected my E-1 from Olympus yesterday, the grip looks as good as new. Except the back which I didn't ask to change. Stupid mistake, the thing started to come off. So I went online to look for gaffer tape and lucky for me! The Studio Outfitters have them in black and pickup point was at Clementi! So I bought the smallest roll and came home to start taping up my E-1.

Lucky for me, it's a little water resistant. Though its not meant to be replacement for weather sealing my E-1, most importantly is that it keeps the rubber from flapping about when using it or completely falling apart when I use it and the rubber starts to fall down the road. I taped up the back as well to prevent me from pulling the whole thing off.

Before, the front.

Before, the side

After, front view

After, rear view

Ain't the prettiest thing around, but it gets the job done! And it doesn't feel too bad touch wise, and it doesn't affect the ergonomics!

So yea... My packages finally came yesterday! No idea why DHL always sends to the wrong facility then corrects it.

My Packages! Still in their boxes!

My packages outside of their boxes!

My packages contain my books and photography stuff!
1. Quantum Turbo Battery UK Charger
2. Quantum Flash Cable for Olympus FL-50/R
3. Lumiquest Midibouncer for handle mount flashes
4. Mastering Digital Exposure And HDR Imaging by Chris Weston
5. Mastering Digital Color by David Saffir
6. Mastering Digital Printing by Harald Johnson
6. Colour Correction For Digital Photographers Only by Ted Padova
7. Practical Colour Management by Eddie Tapp

Quite a lot of stuff, can't wait till March! Will be ordering a couple more books as well as a few stuff from Vat19, full of awesome and weird stuff! And I might be getting another dry fit shirt! And maybe a business card holder :S. Still deciding on the books though, got some good ones. OH! Not forgetting Joe McNally's Language Of Light DVD! Its pretty ex actually... USD $160 if I'm not wrong, but well... No point holding on to so much money. Pursuit of knowledge is priceless!

So today I went over to my buddy, Jimmo's place for his son's first month! Check the pictures! Shot with Olympus XZ-1, which by the way, is so quiet it reminds me of rangefinder cameras and I'm now seriously tempted to get one for myself. Though I'd wait for noise control to be fixed, at the moment even ISO 100 is noisy, 400 is blotchy. I wouldn't mind the noise and treating this as a film camera, but please no blotchy noise removal.

Father and son posing

Father and son soft moments, soft focus art filter

Father and son quiet moments (Seriously! The XZ-1 is a life saver! none intrusive picture taking! Gotta hand it to compact cameras eh? :D)

I'm pretty sure that's a smile :D

Family portrait, not the most well taken, not well lit but definitely a moment that will last forever in the family!

Man... What a cute baby! His name is Yujin by the way. Apparently pronounced the same as Eugene. The reason why I asked Jimmo how to pronounce Yujin's name is because, as a Chinese, Yu is not pronounced as You/Yew/Eww but pronounced as Yu. Hahaha! Well, in a couple of years, someone would call me Uncle Matthew for real. Though not related by blood, but its respect I guess :D

After I was done, I went over to Royston, my secondary school friend's home to check his laptop. Then I struggled to get home as I was very tired. Hahaha.

That's all for tonight! Tomorrow meeting my dear "sister" Jia Zhen for dinner and meeting auntie Wendy to pass her the E-PL2! Good luck to Jia Zhen for her interview tomorrow! I hope she gets a new job so that she wouldn't waste her life away at her current one. Good night world!

Another week has passed...

Hey guys!

So yea... Another week has passed since my last entry. Been busy with work and other stuff... So... I got my 7-14 lens back! Forgotten how heavy it was, I also did my E-PL2 review. Saturday we had low light shooting. Shot with the Olympus E-5 and Zuiko Digital 14-35mm f2 SWD lens. Nice lens, but seriously not my cup of tea. Returned the gear yesterday and had a chat about some stuff :D

Lets see... Basically work work work. I finally sent in my E-1 for rubber grip replacement, got around to arranging a meeting date with one of the Clubsnap members to try out his Cactus radio trigger. Hope it works, seems like the best I can find so far...

What else... Lijuan has handed up her FYP and I'm proud of her for finally completing. Good luck to Zheng Yan and whoever is in their final years as long as I know them.

I had a long chat with my mentor last Saturday. Great man... Really inspired me to be a better person and photographer. Still have so much to learn from him. I can't even begin to say how great a person he is to me. My brother, father figure, mentor and friend. What the... That sounded like something one would write on a tombstone. Ah well, most importantly, its not :D

That's all for now. Have a good day everyone!

Personal Feelings & Mini "Review" Of The Olympus E-PL2

Hey guys! So this is a none technical review of the new Olympus E-PL2 based on my previous experience with the first PEN, the Olympus E-P1.

Front

The design of the E-PL2, like the E-PL1, is unique in the PEN family. It looks similar to the E-PL1 but it is more curved that the E-PL1. The grip has been redesigned in a way that it isn’t a sudden bump but somewhat resembles a gentle slope which so far has been a joy to use, even with hands my size, it doesn’t feel uncomfortable. This camera may lack the retro look of the E-P1 and E-P2, but it still has its own beauty to it. Comes in 4 colors. Black, silver, red and white. There’s a tiny LED light used for self timer countdown.

Back

This camera has more or less all the features and technologies of the older models as well as having new ones not found on any other PEN at the moment.

Like the E-P1 and the E-P2, it sports a large 3” screen unlike the E-PL1 which has a 2.7” screen. Unlike the previously mentioned models, it has a piece of tough plastic protecting the screen which gives more confidence in using the camera without fear of the actual screen underneath being scratched.

It has a data port like the E-PL1 and E-P2 but the one on the E-PL2 is the generation 2 version. Using this port, it is able to use accessories such as the new bluetooth PENPAL and the Macro Arm Lights. In addition to these 2, it can use existing accessories ie the stereo mic input as well as the electronic viewfinder. Like the E-PL1, it has a dedicated video recording button which is a very convenient way to start recording when in any of the still image mode. Rather than having to turn the dial to video model, simply press the record button.

The E-PL2 has the same dial as the E-P1 and E-P2 though it only has one. Coming from the E-P1, it was a little bit difficult to change aperture and shutter speed but it’s easier than pressing buttons like the E-PL1. The advance menu setting by default is hidden so it requires to be shown before advance settings can be changed. Which is not really a deal breaker since the E-PL2 is considered as an entry level PEN. Having the menus shown might create unnecessary problems to new comers should they accidentally change settings.

The lack of a dedicated AEL/AFL button is no cause for alarm as you can simply program the FN button to work as one. As well as programming the other buttons to suit your needs. I left mine as default with the FN working as an AEL/AFL button. The lack of an exposure compensation button caught me off guard but I eventually got used to using the dial instead.

The buttons have changed slightly from the E-PL1 with the layout being similar to the E-P1 and E-P2.

Top

The on/off button has been refined, it is now long, thin and recessed into the body and placed within reach of my index finger behind the shutter button. Unlike previous models which are circular in shape and a slight distance away except the E-PL1. The built in flash of the Olympus E-PL2 is similar to the E-PL1. Also being able to control 3 groups of wireless flashes. The shutter release button is bigger compared to the E-PL1.

Bottom

The bottom is where door to the battery and memory card is located. With the new camera comes a new battery. The the old batteries can still be used though. The E-PL2 uses SD cards. Unlike the previous PENs, which takes SDHC, the E-PL2 is the first to take SDXC.

Others

The E-PL2 utilizes a Hi-speed live MOS 12 megapixel image sensor and the Truepic Turbo V engine to process the images. Like all E-system cameras and PENs, it uses a Super Sonic Wave Filter (SSWF) to remove dust.

Utilizing the micro four thirds mount, with use of adapters, virtually any lens can be mounted onto the PEN.

The Olympus E-PL2 now has higher shutter speed up to 1/4000 sec compared to the E-PL1 where the top shutter speed is 1/2000, however, it is worth noting that the ISO for the E-PL2 is capped at ISO 200 at its lowest where the E-PL1 is 100, so its back to square one for shooting wide open without the use of ND filters.

The top ISO of the E-PL2 is 1 stop more than the E-PL1 rating at ISO 6400, same as E-P1 and E-P2 as compared to the E-PL1 rated at ISO 3200.

The new E-PL2 comes with a new 14-42 f3.5-5.6 MK II lens which is MSC. Optimize for both silent still or video shooting, it is faster than its predecessor as well as being extremely quiet.

The E-PL2 also has the AF tracking which was first on the E-P2 where once it focuses on something. It will follow that subject in as long as its in its view. It is still a little bit slow in tracking but it works nevertheless.

Modes

Other than the standard P A S M and the usual scene modes. The art filters have changed a little when compared to my E-P1. They both have pop art, soft focus, pin hole and grainy film. The differences are dramatic tone which is a first on the PENs,first introduced on the Olympus E-5 as well as diorama. Gentle sepia has been replaced in comparison to the E-PL1 and there is no cross process like in the E-P2 which I would personally prefer over the diorama art filter.

The art filters now have variations to them as well as having a frame effect which baiscally adds a border/frame to the processed image which does not appear in the RAW file, only in the jpeg

The pop art filter now has a under exposed saturated along with the original highly saturated image. It can also combine with the soft focus and pin hole art filters.

The grainy film art filter has a lower contrast tone to it along with the high contrast art filter.

The pin hole art filter now has 3 tones to it rather than one. The original has a somewhat greenish tint to it. Now it has a blueish and reddish tint version to it.

The scene modes now have a Fisheye effect,wide-angle and macro mode to it when using the convertors on the lens.

The E-PL2 shoots 720p HD video and allows the user to use the art filters like previous PENs. The E-PL2’s video mode allows users to shoot in program mode, aperture priority mode and even in manual mode.

The following are examples of the art filters

Pop Art Type II

Pop Art And Pin Hole

Pop Art And Soft Focus

Pop Art With Frame

Grainy Film Type I

Pin Hole Type I

Conclusion

My experience with the E-PL2 is that it makes a fine addition to the PEN family and a worthy camera to upgrade from the E-P1. It doesn’t differ much from the E-P2 and E-PL1. The E-PL2 itself has improved ergonomics as well as image quality. If you’re looking for a compact camera with a multitude of different lenses to play with, a transition camera, a backup or a compact camera without compromised image quality, this would be a camera well worth considering. I'd personally prefer gentle sepia and cross process in place of diorama and dramatic tone but of course, that's just me.

Some shots I've shot normally as I travel around, all shot on Olympus E-PL2 with different lenses.

Quick entry

Hey guys!

So nothing much has happened recently, been mainly working. I finally started doing my Olympus E-PL2 review! Will probably be out next week or so? Still shooting and thinking of tests for it to pit against my trusty Olympus E-P1. Just wanted to let everyone know I'm alive hahaha. Good night world!

Nothing much again

Hey Guys!

Nothing much really... Work today was extremly slow and boring. Met up with the Olympus bird shooters, 4 guys, Krist and I. Quite cool though their stories and the way they see details and shoot. I have a whole new level of respect for them!

Listening to them talk just makes me more sad if Olympus decides to really stop the 4/3 system and there isn't any support on m4/3s for 4/3 lenses and if the pro level m4/3 cameras just cannot make it in the world of professional photography. Not saying I'm there yet, but I sure hope to be up there. But in the meantime, I shall treasure my time as a photographer with my Olympus gear. Afterall... At the end of the day, its still the person behind the camera as I've seen the other day.

So yea, just wanna share this song that I heard today though its been out for 2 years plus. By Jon Foreman of Switchfoot. Broken From The Start from the EP Limbs And Branches! Really great song and I hope you enjoy it as much as I do. Good night world!

Nothing much

Hey guys!

So Chinese new year was pretty boring, nothing much happened though. Celebrated Melanie's 19th birthday last Saturday. Got back an E-PL2 yesterday. Pretty tired and bummed with quite a lot of stuff. Applied for poly today. It goes as such.

1. Information Technology (Singapore Poly)
2. Visual Effects And Motion Graphics (Singapore Poly)
3. Digital Media (Singapore Poly)
4. Infocomm Security Management (Singapore Poly)
5. Information Technology (Ngee Ann Poly)

Personally hoping for my first choice, but the others aren't too bad other than the Ngee Ann Poly due to traveling issues.

Also! Ben 10 Ultimate Alien Season 2 has finally started! Quite cool though, to show an early prototype of the Omnitrix known as the Unitrix. But apparently it doesn't need a bearer nor does it transform anyone else. Like the Omnitrix, it apparently absorbs DNA, but the Unitrix randomizes it and creates a copy of the species. Whereas the Omnitrix changes the DNA of the bearer. Confusing... But another thing is, if Eunice is the Unitrix, and the Unitrix DNA sample is from Gwen, wouldn't that make Eunice related to Gwen and Ben? And if Ben likes Eunice, wouldn't it be odd? Also... Its quite interesting then Ben ran out of power pretty fast when he was Ultimate Spidermonkey but not when he used Armordrillo, then changes back at will, then used NRG to fight Sunder, before changing Cannonbolt to go after Sunder and reaching the base of the cliff? Or hill? Whatever that is, then change to Ultimate Cannonbolt and fights throughout with Sunder till Azmuth arrives. And Cannonbolt, like Lodestar, is surprisingly strong upper body wise o.O

Anyway, I'm pretty tired now, hope to shoot with E-PL2 and do my own review here soon so good night world!

Chinese New Year Eve!

Hey guys!

So let me start by wishing everyone a Happy Chinese New Year despite not reaching yet but heck! :D

Lets see... Nothing much on Tuesday, went out to shoot at Chinatown before going back to the office, today went to the office then went to Jurong to shoot. As well as deliver some boards.

So yea... I got my filters! My Gradual Neutral Density 2 (GND) and my Circular Polarizing (CPL). Both second hand, both pretty good condition though the CPL seems like it has some fungus spots?

So yea... I cleaned it up, and went down to Cathay Photo today and I got the filter holder but not the adapter ring due to no stock of 67mm diameter.

Photos will come once I get my adapter ring of course. Hopefully pay will come in soon then I can get my stuff from USA all in one shot. I'm still thinking what books to get though, really hard to choose from so many titles, especially my book list which is pretty long now, with books on many many topics. The other day I posted a link to Joe McNally's blog and this was the video made.

Pretty awesome, looking forward to Adorama selling The Language Of Light. Hope its affordable though... So anyway, I'm gonna sleep soon. Hope to have stock of the adapter ring soon and clear skies. I wanna shoot! Good night world and Happy Chinese New Year to everyone! :)
